Theme Ideas for Afternoon Teas

One of the fun things about a Tea is having a theme.  Naturally if the Tea is in honor of an occasion, that is the Theme - i.e. a bridal or baby shower, a birthday, a retirement, etc.  But even then you can further refine the theme, for instance do you know the sex of the baby?  If it's a girl, you may choose to have everything pink, or if a boy all things blue.  That can include the food.

Other ideas for themes can fall into many categories.  Some suggestions are following:

Seasonal - Summer, Autumn, Winter, and Spring.  Each of these will be decorated with nature in mind, as nature is what is changing. This can be done by floral decorations, colors, and types of food relevant to that season.

Holidays (official and unofficial) - There are the ones that immediately come to mind - New Year's Day, Valentine's Day, Purim, Passover, Easter, Feast of Tabernacles, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, and Christmas, but don't forget the other days we celebrate. There can be lots of reasons for a Tea such as political remembrances - Martin Luther King Jr. Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Columbus Day, and Veteran's Day.  Then there are the other unofficial holidays such as St. Patrick's Day, Mother's Day, and Father's Day, as well as some I have not thought of, but you may.

Spa Tea - gather your girlfriends together for a day of pampering.  Have manicures, pedicures, massages, and facials and a soak in a hot tub along with your afternoon tea.

Club Teas - Book of the Month, Red Hat Society, etc.
Children's Tea - Treat your little girl and her friends to a special day of elegance.

Tea Tasting Tea - gather your friends and a bunch of teapots to try out a variety of different types of tea.

Garden Tea - If you have a lovely flower garden/yard, show it off by having a Tea where you can sit and enjoy its beauty.

Period Tea - Whatever period of history you enjoy, have a day of dress up that reflects that period - Victorian (the best of all), Roaring 20's, Edwardian, 50's, Revolutionary, Civil War, WWII, whatever strikes your fancy.

A Musical Tea - Are some of your friends accomplished musicians?  Would they give an impromtu concert?

An Art Tea - Are some of your friends artists?  Showcase their work for them with a viewing.  Perhaps they would give a short talk.

Lecture Teas - Invite people with interesting hobbies or information to share with your guests.

Dance Teas - Have someone who knows something about Latin or Ballroom dancing come to give some lessons.  Or just go on the internet and learn some steps yourself to show your friends and have fun.

These are just a few ideas that you can use as an excuse to invite your friends over for a Tea.  If you have more, please share them with other readers.

If you like one of these ideas, but need help planning a menu or decorations, just ask. I would be glad to offer suggestions.  I will also eventually have a list of recipes for different types of Tea foods, but would be happy to provide some upon request until that time.
